Can I homeschool my child if I don't have a teaching certificate?

Answered By Heidi Trumple and Robin Davies, Editors

Of course (see next paragraph for an update). In fact, for most states, you don't even need a high school diploma to teach your child at home. Learning at home is a learning experience for the whole family, and learning comes from what you learn together through life experiences, field trips and books. Your relationship with your children does not become one of teacher to child, rather, it is still one of parent to child. Better yet, it becomes one of mentor to child.

Something to note is that some states have recently tried to require some sort of certification to be able to homeschool. You will need to look request that information from your own state. If they tell you that you need certain requirements, ask where they can find this in your state's law. They should be able to point you to the reference. The reason this is important to do is that some state offices (as well as School Districts) have tried to push you into certain compliances that would like you to have but are not really necessary. So, be sure you actually read your state's law before assuming things you hear are correct.
